Welcome to the Lamma Outrigger Canoe Club's information website and roster.
A little bit about us:
The Lamma Outrigger Canoe Club (LOCC) was founded in 2006, with two second-hand, six-person outrigger canoes and a dozen or so brave enthusiasts. We have made our home on Tai Wan To Beach (locally known as Power-Station Beach) in Yung Shue Wan, on Lamma Island (Hong Kong).
Eight years on, we have a fleet of five (going on 6!) six-person canoes (OC6s), two three-person canoes (OC3s), and OC2 and numerous personally owned OC1s (singles) and surfskis.
Racing and Events:
Our crews have paddled at home in Hong Kong, abroad in Micronesia and Australia, and in Hawaii. We have many international trips and races ahead of us, as well as numerous races and events that take place here in Hong Kong, including our own annual Round Lamma Race, which is the premier middle-distance Iron Race in Hong Kong (approximately 24km - depending on your steersperson's nimbleness).
By the numbers:
From our early days of about 12-15 paddlers, our membership has grown to support approximately 80 outrigger-paddling addicts, which accounts for considerably more than 1% of the population of Lamma Island!
One percent may not sound impressive, but overall, the general population of Hong Kong is just shy of 7 million, and if one percent of the whole population of Hong Kong paddled, that would come to 70,000 outrigger canoe paddlers!
In point of fact, there are only about 350 outrigger paddlers in Hong Kong, so we're very excited about our paddler-to-population ratio!
Did we say we were paddle addicts? The LOCC offers 9 training sessions per week: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 6:00am, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm, and Saturdays and Sundays at approximately 8:30am and 10:30am.
Unlike God, we rest on the first day, not the seventh (duck for lightning bolts here).
Out team logo:
That funky design you see on our team shirts - that is a highly stylized turtle, which represents two things:
- The Green Turtle: Lamma Island is the home of the LAST colony of green turtles in Hong Kong. While their numbers have sadly diminished, some still make their way to nest on a protected beach on the south of the island.
- The turtle itself is designed from the Chinese Characters that represent "Lamma" (南丫). If you look really carefully, you can see this. If you read Chinese, please don't sneer unless you can create a better design (call us if you can - but don't tell our members who already have this logo tattooed on their bodies!).
Guest paddlers and fees:
If you are interested in trying outrigger canoeing, we welcome all newcomers. All new paddlers are offered four free sessions (to be used in one month) before they are asked to join the club by becoming fee-paying members. Costs are HK$900 per quarter (US$115) or HK$2,500 per year (about US$320).
We happen to think we're the best bargain in town.
So, if you're interested, give us a shout:
You can contact us through this website, OR you can email the club chairperson at: firstname.lastname@example.org - OR if you feel a dramatic compulsion to talk to a person, call Gina at +852-9121-3648 or Skype at Gina.Miller.HKG.
Outrigger canoeing is addictive. The Lamma OCC is a close-knit, enthusiastic club that loves newcomers. If you are new to the island and join us, then you've just made 80+ new friends. If you've lived here for a while, and wonder why on earth anyone would get up at 500am to go paddle in the dark - you're about to find out.
Looking forward to seeing you on the water!
